    Survey Technician, Mid-Level

    This Position is located in either Lake Oswego or Eugene


    The Survey Technician will perform office and field assignments involving the use of total stations, data collectors, digital levels, GNSS receivers, Trimble Business Center, Microstation/InRoads and AutoCAD/Civil 3D; use knowledge and experience for route, topographic, construction and land development surveying; interact with teams from different disciplines throughout the company; utilize/maintain specialized survey equipment, and perform related technical tasks with regular review and direction from Project Surveyors.  This position will help supervise/mentor lower level survey technicians; generate reports and provide project support services as directed. 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Perform and exhibit a high level mastery of all routine procedures and survey equipment.
    • Must have a high level of mastery with complex procedures under limited direction from others.
    • Perform surveys, gather data, analyze/interpret results, draft reports, maintain records, research public records and carry out assignments with project team members.
    • Prepare survey project deliverables, per work assignment.
    • Communicate effectively with clients and other staff members.
    • Ensure survey instrumentation and field equipment is operated properly, maintained in good working condition and that routine maintenance is performed.
    • Coach/Mentor junior level survey technicians in survey techniques.
    • Practice health and safety awareness and self-protection at all times.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Requirements/Minimum Qualifications


    This position requires a High School Diploma or an Associates of Science Degree, combined with 4 years’ experience.  A Bachelors' of Science degree in surveying and/or engineering is preferred and shall substitute for 2 years' worth of experience. 


    • Land Surveying Intern (LSI) preferred
    • Certified Survey Technician (CST) preferred
    • Ability to work towards obtaining PLS, preferred

    Job Related Skills:

    • Highly proficient at being able to draw conclusions from survey data.
    • Highly proficient at being able to keep accurate and concise field notes.
    • Must be able to apply procedures and techniques, including general scientific theories and engineering concepts and principles independently.
    • Advanced proficiency adjusting and operating surveying equipment.
    • Advanced proficiency at coordinate geometry and trigonometry skills and ability to apply them to survey tasks.
    • Fully proficient oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to manage one's own time effectively.
    • Excellent customer service, team interactions, coordination, and communication skills.
    • Interest and ability to learn new software and ability to work cooperatively in a professional team environment.
    • Will act as a mentor to lower level Survey Staff.
    • Developing proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel).
    • Demonstrate high level of proficiency with AutoCAD/Civil 3D, and/or MicroStation/InRoads. 
    • Advanced proficiency with GNSS receivers, data collectors, total stations, digital levels and Trimble Business Center.
    • Must possess Oregon or Washington Driver's License.


    • Conducts routine to complex surveys independently under broad parameters developed with senior survey staff.
    • Solves routine to complex logistical and technical problems.
    • Follows established procedures within scope of assignments and scope of contracts.
    • Exercises independent judgment with broad direction and oversight from Project survey staff, and/or Survey Division Manager
    • Accountable for technical performance on projects and for successful completion of assigned project tasks.
    • Accountable for other Survey Technicians work and performance in the office and out in the field

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

    This work is typically done in the field at project sites and there will be some work within an office environment. 

    Office Conditions:

    • Basic work shift will consist of 8 hour days with the likelihood of extended hours, and/or weekend work depending on project deliverables. Overtime work may be required based on project deadlines.

    Field Conditions:

    • Basic work shift will consist of 8 – 10 hour days with the likelihood of extended hours, and/or weekend work depending on project deliverables.
    • Ability to move, lift, pull, and push 30 - 50 lbs.
    • Outside exposure to all weather elements, extreme temperatures and hostile vegetation may be required.
    • Ability to last an 8 – 10 hour shift, enduring prolonged physical activity involving standing, climbing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pulling, and swinging.
    • Must have functional sense organs in order to communicate and observe effectively and safely in the field.
    • Strong balance and agility to occasionally climb ladders and/or crawl through small openings.
    • Out of town work and travel will be required for this position from time to time.
    • Overtime work will be required when traveling.
