    The role:

    Join us in keeping Oregon’s roadways safe! We are recruiting for a project surveyor to join our team! In this role, you will oversee assigned survey projects through project development processes in partnership with others on each project’s delivery leadership team. Key responsibilities include planning survey projects and coordinating with the crew to determine project scope, schedule and budget.

    The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at a professional land surveyor 1 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for a civil engineering specialist 2 ($4,272 - $6,309 monthly) to apply, as we may consider under-filling the position until the selected candidate acquires a professional land surveyor's license. Under-filling will not exceed 24 months.

    A day in the life:

    • Plan, schedule, and complete topographic, retracement, construction and right of way monumentation surveys.
    • Review progress of field survey work and provide technical guidance to the survey crews.
    • Research, interpret and analyze surveys, maps, plats, plans, deeds and field survey data.
    • Read, interpret and revise electronic map data to prepare reports and stakeout data for construction activities.
    • Develop right of way base maps.
    • Serve as a technical resource on project development teams.
    • Work with team members to determine project right of way needs and prepare legal descriptions.
    • Clarify complex survey information and provide insight regarding legal issues related to land surveying.
    • Prepare, stamp and submit surveys to the county surveyor’s office for recording.
    • Prepare/oversee topographical base map creation from field survey data using computer aided drafting (CAD) software.
    • Work is performed in an office environment with occasional field work required.
    • Field work involves exposure to rough terrain, traffic, stinging insects, poisonous plants, hard surfaced pavement and inclement weather.
    • Long hours may be required.
    • Must be able to travel within the region and occasionally statewide.
    • Duties involve contact with elected and local officials, various media and the public who may be emotionally involved in issues.
    • Must be able to lift and carry 20 to 50 pound survey instruments and traffic control signs.
    • May be required to occasionally lift and file 50 to 60 pound archive boxes.

    What we need:

    A valid professional land surveyor (PLS) license.
    Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.

    Additionally, driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position, including for the underfill option.

    What we need for the civil engineering specialist 2 underfill option:

    A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geomatics, surveying or transportation-related engineering and two years of civil or transportation-related engineering or surveying experience.
    Five years of civil or transportation-related engineering or surveying experience. One year of this experience must have been independently planning and completing assignments.
    An equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Note: To be eligible for the civil engineering specialist 2 underfill option, a candidate must have passed all the professional land surveyor's exams (Oregon and national). The candidate must have their professional land surveyor's license (the ability to stamp) within 24 months of hire.

    • Demonstrated working knowledge of current survey practices.
    • Experience in computer aided drafting (CAD). Preference will be given to applicants with CAD experience using MicroStation V8i, InRoads v8i, Leica Geo Office (LGO), StarNet, and Excel spreadsheets to perform survey computations and create/check digital terrain models, centerline and R/W alignments, and to produce electronic and hard copy maps of survey.
    • Experience using Leica Infinity Survey Software.
    • Experience filing maps with various county surveyor’s offices and performing research of maps and plats.
    • Experience with mapping boundaries preferably public right of way boundaries, preparing right of way base maps, and producing legal descriptions for the acquisition of public right of way.
