    The role:

    Apply today to join our team as a survey technician! In this key role, you will conduct field surveys for the development, design and monumentation of our facilities.

    A day in the life:

    • Measure distances, angles and elevations.
    • Establish horizontal and vertical control for proposed and existing facilities.
    • Perform detailed surveys using manual and electronic survey equipment, computers and complex software.
    • Locate and tie government corners, property corners, cultural features and terrain data.
    • Obtain the terrain data necessary to produce 3-dimensional topographic and cadastral maps.
    • Provide initial staking for transportation projects.
    • Stake proposed right of way and establish and monument right of way, roadway centerlines and land boundaries.
    • Communicate survey information.
    • Submit and/or receive field notes and electronically collected data for processing.
    • Clear brush for the running of survey lines and obtain terrain information.
    • Prepare, present and sponsor action items and crew team proposals.
    • Provide work zone traffic control by flagging traffic and setting up appropriate warning signs.
    • Work is performed outdoors 50% or more of the time.
    • Field work involves exposure to rough terrain, traffic, stinging insects, poisonous plants, surfaced pavements and inclement weather.
    • Must lift and carry 20 to 50 lb. survey instruments and traffic control signs. 
    • Must use shovels, picks, jackhammers, axes, chain saws, machetes and sledgehammers.
    • Office work environment involves typical office working conditions at desk, drafting table and computer workstations and requires lifting and filing 50 to 60 lb. archive boxes.

    What we need:

    An associate's degree in engineering technology from a community college or technical school of engineering and two years of experience directly related to engineering.
    Three and one-half years (42 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.
    An equivalent combination of education and experience
    Note: If you are currently a transportation maintenance specialist 2 (TMS 2) or have been one in the past, in addition to your completed application, please attach section three of your TMS 2 position description to receive full credit for your related work. If your experience includes work in multiple maintenance disciplines (e.g. highway, sign, bridge, striping or landscape) please attach section three of the position description for each of the relevant disciplines.

    Additionally, driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position.
